The OIOP
Lecture Series
(L-R)
Advocate M P Vashi, Ms Manju Nichani,
Retd Justice H Suresh and Mr Sadanand Shetty
One India One People organized its first lecture under the
‘The OIOP Lecture Series’ at K C College on October 7, 2002. The
topic for the evening, ‘Courting Justice, Dismissing Delays', created
awareness about the delays in the justice delivery. It also highlighted how
these delays can be remedied. Two legal luminaries - Justice
H Suresh (retired) of the Bombay High Court and Advocate M P Vashi
-spoke on the occasion.
Justice Suresh
spoke on judicial accountability. He questioned the accountability
of judges and highlighted the judiciary’s bias towards the rich.
He kept driving home the point that the judges were not accountable
and there was an urgent need to evoke a method to establish their
accountability.
Advocate Vashi’s
talk was very hard hitting. He emphasized the fact that people were
slowly losing faith in the judiciary. He said, “There is an urgent
need for action. If the judiciary collapses, then the citizens will
have no forum to address their grievances”. He felt that a dialogue
between the members of the bar, public, law ministers and judges
was very essential. The public, which can make a difference to this
rotting system, is just not interested, said Vashi. He had a few
valid suggestions to introduce the day system instead of the board
system so as to avoid inconvenience caused to public such as to
abolish all court vacations so that work should go on unhampered,
to abolish court fees and deliver immediate judgments.
The lecture
was followed by a brief question-answer session. Mr Kamlesh Godia,
Marketing Manager, OIOP proposed the vote of thanks.
