One India One People Clubs in Schools / Colleges

Objective

The One India One People (OIOP) Foundation is committed to propagate and preserve Indian values, traditions and culture and build awareness about social, economic and political issues peculiar to India amongst Indians.

An important initiative of the OIOP Foundation is to teach our youth good citizenship through One India One People Clubs in schools and colleges so that they grow into responsible global citizens. The OIOP Clubs spread the message of unity, instill in the youth a sense of pride for India, inculcate good values, sensitise them to social issues concerning our country and conduct various meaningful activities such as:

•  Peace talks

•  Rainwater harvesting

•  Fire-fighting drill

•  Administering first aid

•  Waste water management

•  Civil Defence/Disaster management

•  Vermiculture

The Foundation also offers to source an instrumental/music/dance/teacher for schools, provided they have a minimum of 15 committed students interested in learning Indian music.

New activities are added, based on inputs from the school management/faculty and the students.

Procedure for OIOP Club opening

Once a school/college chooses to be a member of the OIOP Club:

•  It selects 8-10 students drawn from Class VIII & IX (if it is a school) / Class XI or 1st year degree students (if it is a college) as OIOP Club members.

•  One/Two teachers are nominated as co-ordinators for the Club activities.

•  A brief inaugural ceremony is held in the school to mark the opening of the OIOP Club by lighting the lamp and a brief introduction is given about the OIOP Foundation.

•  A certificate acknowledging the school as a member of the OIOP Club is given on the occasion.

•  The school is expected to give at least two/three days of its calendar year to conduct activities of its choice from the above mentioned activities.

•  The activities are conducted free of cost in the school premises and are open to all students of the secondary section.

Responsibility of OIOP Club members

•  The Club members will act as ambassadors for OIOP and lend support to OIOP in fulfilling its objectives.

•  Read and share articles of interest that are published in OIOP magazine with teachers/fellow students/members.

•  Give brief feedback about the magazine that will be published as a letter in the OIOP magazine.

OIOP Socially Responsible Student–Citizen Award

The first of the ‘One India One People (OIOP) Socially Responsible Student-Citizen Award' was given away to 12 students at Mumbai in December 2008 for their exemplary community service. The picture shows (L-R) Mr. Anil Agarwal (Advisory Board member, OIOP Foundation), Mr. V. Shankar (Trustee, Shanmukhananda Sabhagriha and chief guest at the OIOP function), Mrs. Soumyalatha S. Shetty (Trustee-OIOP), Mrs. Rehana Khatib (Principal, Anjuman-i-Islam, Bandra), Mrs. Sucharita R. Hegde (Trustee and Managing Editor, OIOP), with the award winners.

The Foundation has instituted an annual award – ‘OIOP Responsible Student-Citizen Award' , which is given to:

•  two students of the school (not necessarily Club members), who have done unique/exemplary community work which other students can emulate.

•  The award comprises a cash prize of Rs. 500/-, an one-year subscription to One India One People magazine, and a certificate of appreciation.

The award is being given to motivate students to devote some time from their busy academic schedules to a social cause that will help them in growing into responsible citizens of tomorrow. The two teachers appointed as coordinators must select the students for the award in an impartial manner, clearly mentioning the work that justifies the award.

The award will be given away at a common function that will be held annually in the month of December/January where students, teachers and parents will be invited.

We look forward to making OIOP Clubs meaningful and help in moulding our students into better citizens.
